My regular garage looked today (cos it has been irritating me and qoted just under £200!! Any suggestions? Apparently the solonoid is prob gone but comes as big sealed unit and then labour involves taking out elec window motor as well.... I can live with as is but if anyone has a better idea (or a s/h lock) it would help. At first i thought it just auto locked after 30 seconds ( which is annoying enough) but now it seems more random than that.. it will even try and lock it self when a door or the boot is open which sets the alarm off...

It's abit of a design fault really as the water ways in the block are way bigger than the water ways in the head so water just sits against the surface of the head! this in time eats away and seriously pits the surface, infact on my head it's so bad it's got too close to the edge of the cylinder and has pitted up to the metal ring of the gasket so I don't think it will seal any more at all! so now the water ... I've got VAGCOM 409.1 and a usb ebay cable - which kinda works but I really want to get into the measuring blocks and the cable is flaky - keeps giving the ' too many communication errors to continue' message. beers/cash forthcoming if required I think it's the crankshaft speed sensor thing AGAIN, as it just won't even try to fire. The only codes that come up are ABS ones - which fits in with the light coming on now and then!! so ... They were trying to get the car going for about 3hours and it just wasnt happening. At first they thought it was the distributor, so thats been replaced, checked the spark plugs which were all fine but replaced them anyway, i do have petrol in the car aswell so isnt me running out of petrol lol.
